This daunting project was shelved for nearly a decade because computer technology was not so advanced in the mid 1990's and using the available technology would have increased the budget to $400 million,hence no company was willing to fund the project.

Work began on the film in 2006.The language used by aliens in the movie was developed by a linguistic at University of Southern California Dr Paul Frommer. The meaning of the word Avatar as explained by the film maker is "Incarnation of one of the Hindu Gods taking a flesh form".This means that in the near future technology is capable of injecting human intelligence in a remotely located body. Hallelujah mountains shown in Pandora were inspired particularly by the mountain ranges in China.

Innovations made during the movie included a new system for lighting the massive Jungle area,improved techniques to capture facial expressions and a motion capture stage or volume six time larger than previously used.Microsoft designed a Digital Assessment System(DAM) especially for Avatar to cater the huge amount of data daily recorded.A server farm using 4000 HP servers and 35000 processor cores with 104 terabytes of RAM and 3 petabytes of network area was established to manage the data during the filming of avatar.Each minute of avatar accounts for 17.28 GB of Storage.An additional $150 million were spent to promote the film globally.This landmark film was finally released in December 2009.
