The seeds of this retail giant were sown by Sam Walton the founder of this retail business.Sam grew up during the Great Depression and had to do a variety of Jobs to make ends meet.He milked the family cow and sold the milk to the customers.He also delivered newspaper on a paper route and sold magazines for subscriptions.During his graduation he was employed as a waiter to support his education and also held a number of other low paying Jobs.After completing his graduation he joined the US military and eventually reached the rank of captain.He left the military service in 1945.

After leaving the military service Sam Walton opened his first Ben Franklin Retail store with a $20000 loan from his father in law and his personal savings of $5000.The Store was a Success and inspired Sam to expand his business.His assistant cam up with the name Wal-mart for the new chain.By 1967  the chain consisted of 24 stores across the state of Arkansas and had reached $12.6 million in sales.The chain continued to expand throughout the 1980s and 90s and by 1990 the sales had grown to a mammoth $32 billion only in the US.Sam Walton was awarded with the presidential medal of freedom by George Bush(Senior) in 1992 for his achievements.

As of 2014 Walmart has 11088 stores across continents and has a net income of about $17 billion dollars.It employees more than 2.2 million people worldwide and is listed in the list of fortune 500 companies.The Walton family has a combined net worth of more than $152 billion.Not bad for the family of a person who has spent his childhood and youth delivering newspapers and waiting tables in exchange for meals.He once said :
