Reverse Swing Explanation
Once the bowl becomes older and rough it will start moving in the opposite direction to where it would usually swing.In order to achieve reverse swing from the older ball one side of the ball needs to be kept shiny by the fielders and other side of the ball should be kept rough.Reverse Swing is achieved when the bowler bowls at high speed particularly above 135 kph.The bowl moves in the direction of the shine due to its weight.All this happens very late to the bowl thus making it difficult for the batsmen to pick up the delivery and adjust to it. Sarfraz Nawaz is the founder of reverse swing bowling who passed on his knowledge to Imran Khan.
The phenomenon of reverse swing is relatively simple to understand.As the ball starts to deteriorate its characteristics start to change.The rough side of the ball experiences more turbulence as compared to the shiny side and hence the ball moves in that direction.Thus if you ball an out swinger it will become an in swinger and vice versa thus reverse swing has a lot to do with the wear and tear of the ball and the seam position in flight.
